In Sweden, industrial wood processing equipment supplier Ingenjörsfirman J Mared AB (Mared) has announced that it has been selected by the forest industry and energy technology major Valmet Oyj to supply a complete wood powder system for Göteborg Energi's new hot water boiler at its Rya HVC district heat facility in Gothenburg.

In May 2020, municipal energy utility Göteborg Energi AB announced that will invest around SEK 500 million (≈ EUR 47.7 million) in a new dedicated wood pellet fired hot water boiler at its Rya HVC district heat facility in Gothenburg.
The current two boilers at Rya HVC were originally built for oil and coal, but since 2003 they are fired with wood pellets. These have now reached the end of their technical life and the replacement is part of the company’s ambition that all district heating must come from recycled or renewable sources by 2025.
Göteborg Energi’s goal is fossil-free district heating by 2025. Several steps towards that goal have already been taken, now the Rya district heating plant is being upgraded. The heating plant gets modern technology that will serve the people of Gothenburg for many years, said Anna Svernlöv, Production Manager at Göteborg Energi.
In June 2020, Valmet announced that had been selected by Göteborg Energi to supply a complete wood pellet fired boiler plant with a fuel capacity of 140 MW. As a subcontractor to Valmet, Mared will build a complete system to process the pellets into wood powder for delivery to the boiler.
This is an important delivery where Mared continues on the path taken by delivering climate-smart technology and facilities for a more sustainable future. Although the delivery to Göteborg Energi will be the most extensive in Mared’s history, it is based on proven technology and experience from most previous deliveries. The technology for producing wood powder will be the best on the market today. This is a unique project and we look forward to implementing it together with Valmet, said Thomas Magnusson, Operations CEO at Mared.
