Tecnimont to proceed with blue ammonia plant in UAE
n June 2021, TA’ZIZ and Fertiglobe announced that they have signed an agreement for Fertiglobe to join the world-scale blue ammonia production project at TA’ZIZ in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. The agreement further strengthens the UAE’s hydrogen value proposition, building on the deep experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) of ADNOC, and the world leading ammonia capabilities of Fertiglobe, to develop the first-of-its-kind large scale blue ammonia project in the MENA region (photo courtesy ADNOC).

Italy-headed industrial group Maire S.p.A. (Maire) has announced that Tecnimont (Integrated E&C Solutions) has received from Fertiglobe the notice to proceed with the construction activities related to the low-carbon ammonia plant under development in TA’ZIZ Derivatives Park, in the Ruwais region, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Fertiglobe, the largest nitrogen fertilizer producer in the MENA region, is developing the low-carbon ammonia plant with its project partners TA’ZIZ, a JV between ADNOC and Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund ADQ, Mitsui & Co. Ltd and GS Energy Corporation.

Once in operation in 2027, the ammonia facility, covering 10.8 hectares, will produce 3,000 tonnes per day of ammonia.

The plant will be one of a series of global-scale chemical and industrial facilities that TA’ZIZ is developing that will boost local industry supply chains and enhance the In-Country Value requirements.

As a transition fuel, low-carbon ammonia plays a strategic role in decarbonizing the maritime industry, as well as having several additional energy applications including co-firing in the coal power stations to reduce the carbon footprint.

We are extremely pleased to be confirmed as a preferred partner for the ambitious development projects in the region. The low-carbon ammonia represents a step forward in the decarbonization plans of the UAE and our technological know-how and engineering capabilities will contribute to accelerating the energy transition in the Gulf, said Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE Group.
