The order of the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy, allocating funding to Vilnius Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant, has entered into force. The CHP plant will produce electricity and thermal energy from the local renewable energy sources such as biomass and waste.
According to a statement from Lietuvos Energija, the state-owned energy utility behind the project, almost EUR 91 million will be allocated for the Lot 2 of the project. These funds will be used to build a new cogeneration unit that will produce energy from renewable biomass sources with an electric generating capacity of up to 73 MW and heat capacity of approximately 169 MW. It is estimated that the new Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant will be able to produce up to 40 percent of all heat that is supplied to the capital residents in a centralised manner.
