HAM Group develops its first transportation RNG project in Spain

Spain-headed natural gas refueling technology developer, gas distributor, and service provider HAM Group has announced that it has developed its first biomethane (aka renewable natural gas - RNG) project 100 percent dedicated to the Spanish transportation sector. The project will enable HAM Group customers to utilize biomethane at its service stations.

Using raw biogas supplied by Apergas in Girona, HAM Group has developed its first biomethane (aka renewable natural gas – RNG) project 100 percent dedicated to the Spanish transportation sector. The project will enable HAM Group customers to utilize bioCNG at its service stations (photo courtesy HAM Group).

The project starts from the biogas generated in an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant that co-digests residues, coming from the agri-food industry and from a farm, located in Girona. The 200 Nm3 per hour biogas plant is owned by Apergas SL, a company dedicated to the engineering, development, and operation of biogas plants.

Biomethane has great potential and will play an important role in the energy transition, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, which affect climate change, thanks to its negative carbon footprint. In addition, it is a renewable energy that contributes to the Circular Economy, favoring the local economy, generating employment in rural areas, returning resources and nutrients to the soil, and as a sustainable alternative to incineration or landfills, said Toni Murugó, Marketing Director of HAM Group.

HAM Group subsidiary FNX Liquid Natural Gas has installed a modular upgrading equipment, developed by in-house engineers and the R&D department. This upgrading equipment removes contaminants in the raw biogas which has a methane content of 50 – 60 percent, and the carbon dioxide (CO2) to obtain biomethane with a methane content in excess of 99 percent.

The biomethane, also known as green gas or renewable natural gas (RNG), is then compressed to 250 bar and stored in tube trailers, which are used to transport the biomethane, via a virtual gas pipeline, destined for HAM service – and CNG/LNG dispensing stations which number over 80.

FNX Liquid Natural Gas is an expert in the design, manufacture, and installation of natural gas plants and upgrading, in a modular format. It has its own manufacturing facilities in the Basque Country (image courtesy HAM Group).

In total around 2 tonnes per day of compressed biomethane (bioCNG) is produced. Taking advantage of the availability of bioCNG at the source, HAM will also install a gas dispenser in Vilanant, which will allow vehicles in the area to be refueled.

With this new project at HAM Group we can offer a comprehensive solution to all those customers who have biogas, but do not have a gas pipeline, since we take care of upgrading, compression, the virtual pipeline and the sale of biomethane at our service stations. In this way, we continue to innovate in all our projects, providing our clients with new technologies and products that adapt to their real energy needs, said Toni Murugó.
