The National Bioenergy Programme (NBP) promotes the utilization of biomass such as surplus agricultural residue, agro-based industrial residue, industrial wood-waste, forest residue, and plantation-based biomass for energy generation.

Running from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2026, the five-year NBP has a budgetary outlay of Rs. 1715 Crore (INR 17.15 billion) and is being implemented in two phases.

Using food waste from the canteen, a biogas plant at an industrial metalworks firm in India provides cooking gas for the canteen, displacing a share of the LPG used.

The first phase has a budgetary outlay of Rs. 858 Crore (INR 8.58 billion). This program provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for setting up of bioenergy plants.

As of July 31, 2023, six BioCNG plants and 11 143 small biogas plants have been commissioned, sanctions for which have been issued under the NBP guidelines.

New small biogas plants were commissioned in all of India’s sixteen states, however, Maharashtra (4 167), Karnataka (2 488), and Madhya Pradesh (2 083) combined accounted for almost 80 percent.

Furthermore, with three bioCNG plants, Maharashtra has a 50 percent share with a single bioCNG plant commissioned in the states of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh respectively.
