According to the company, the first delivery from the biorefinery is heading to Joensuu. The recipient of the Lieksa bio-oil is the Savon Voima Joensuu heating plant.
Bio-oil production started on December 2, 2020, following equipment installations and testing in Lieksa in the summer and autumn of this year.
We managed to complete the project on schedule, so naturally, I’ll take this opportunity to offer a big thank you to everyone involved, said Timo Saarelainen, CEO of Green Fuel Nordic.
Supporting Savon Voima’s decarbonization strategy
In its strategy, Savon Voima has outlined its goal to be a fully carbon-neutral energy producer by the end of this decade.
The increasing use of bio-based liquid fuels supports Savon Voima’s strategy to produce carbon-neutral energy. We are also well-equipped to use pyrolysis oil in our heat production. We want to do our part to support pyrolysis oil production and use in the region. It also helps us when there’s more supply on the market, and more demand is created as a result, said Timo Partanen from Savon Voima.
A first for BTG BTL
The milestone also marks a first for the pyrolysis technology developer the Netherlands-headed BTG-BTL – completion of its first pyrolysis plant in the Nordics.
In parallel, a second plant for the Nordic Region, this time in Sweden, is currently under development and is expected to begin operations in Q3 2021.
