In the United States (US), the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has announced the release of its new 2023 Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP). The MYPP is used as an operational guide that sets forth BETO's mission, goals, and strategic approach. It also serves as a resource to help manage and coordinate the office’s activities and communicate its strategy to stakeholders and the public.

The new plan identifies BETO’s forthcoming research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) plans and activities, and outlines why these undertakings are critical to meeting the energy and sustainability challenges facing the United States.
Due to the urgency of reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) across all modes of transportation, BETO has shifted its focus to low-carbon and net-zero carbon fuels for the aviation, marine, rail, and heavy-duty/long-haul industries, which have fewer options for reducing carbon impact.
The new MYPP also prioritizes strategies to enable the decarbonization of the industrial sector via the advancement of renewable chemicals and materials, and it recognizes the potential for bioenergy technologies to decarbonize communities and other economic sectors through sustainable agriculture, improved waste management, and additional beneficial uses of biomass.
Through funding for research and innovative technologies, BETO supports impactful development and use of renewable carbon resources; sustainable and cost-effective domestic energy production; and the increased participation of a diverse set of energy system users, partners, and workforce.
The MYPP serves as a resource to guide BETO-funded research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) toward meeting impactful goals in the 2030 timeframe.
It provides an overview of their priority areas for dedicated R&D&D and identifies BETO’s role in strategically de-risking technologies to accelerate widespread adoption.
It’s critical that BETO, industry, lab, and other government partners collaborate to address decarbonization efforts and the full potential of our nation’s renewable carbon resources to sustainably transform the US economy as outlined in BETO’s Multi-Year Program Plan, said Dr Valerie Sarisky-Reed.
